High consumer demand for protein has tightened the global whey supply and pushed ingredient prices significantly higher, Food Business News reported. In response, food and beverage manufacturers are actively seeking alternative ingredients, including proteins derived from pea, fava beans, and non-whey dairy sources. [1]

Data from commodity intelligence platform Ves showed that whey protein concentrate 34 traded between $2.40 and $2.70 per lb on October 9, up from $1.70 per lb a year earlier. Prices for whey protein concentrate 80 experienced a larger surge, reaching $10.50 per lb on October 6, which represents an increase of nearly 88 percent from the previous year. [1]

Food Business News reported that alternative protein sources often struggle to match the specific functionality of whey. Manufacturers face formulation difficulties because substitute proteins may fail to replicate the taste, texture, and nutritional attributes provided by whey in bar and beverage applications. [1]
