Alimentation Couche-Tard has reportedly offered up to $8 billion to acquire convenience store operator Cumberland Farms. World Coffee Portal, Mobility Plaza, the Irish Sun, and CSP Daily News all reported the bid for the chain. Cumberland Farms operates more than 3,300 petrol stations and convenience retail sites across the United States and Europe. [1][3][4][5]
The target company, formerly known as EG Group, is owned by private equity firm TDR Capital alongside British entrepreneurs Mohsin Issa and Zuber Issa, World Coffee Portal reported. Bloomberg.com reported that market analysts view the potential transaction as strategically sound for Couche-Tard. [1][2]
The attempt to buy Cumberland Farms follows three months after Couche-Tard agreed a separate deal to more than triple its retail footprint in Europe, World Coffee Portal reported. Couche-Tard currently operates retail locations under the Circle K brand. [1]
Cumberland Farms was originally founded in 1939 by Greek immigrants in Cumberland, Rhode Island. The business, which has its headquarters in Westborough, Massachusetts, initially expanded from its dairy origins and acquired Gulf, Chevron, and Exxon assets to grow its fuel and retail presence along the Eastern Seaboard.
