A mandate requiring labels on ultraprocessed foods could cost the food industry 14 billion dollars every year, Food Dive reported, citing a study from the University of Chicago. The proposed labeling requirement would apply to 72 percent of packaged food products currently sold. [1]

According to Food Dive, the proposed requirements would force food manufacturers to incur higher ingredient and reformulation costs. Defining these products has become a central focus of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. under the Make America Healthy Again initiative. However, official efforts to establish a formal definition have slowed down following resistance from industry groups. [1]

Ultraprocessed foods are industrially manufactured products made from natural foods or synthesized organic compounds. They are commonly categorized using the Nova classification system and typically contain additives including emulsifiers, preservatives, flavorings, and colorings to ensure shelf stability and high palatability. [2]

As FTMQ Food reported earlier, private organizations are already moving forward with their own standards. The Non-GMO Project, a non-profit group located in Bellingham, Washington, recently launched a Non-UPF Verified seal to certify items made without ultraprocessed ingredients, with Calypso Harvest becoming an early recipient for its frozen food line. [3]

Regulatory progress remains contested as stakeholders debate the technical boundaries of processing definitions. Food Dive noted that more than 100 medical and nutrition experts recently signed an open letter calling for progress on the issue. [1]
