The Non-GMO Project has introduced a Non-UPF Verified label for food and beverage manufacturers, according to Food Dive. The certification aims to signal to consumers that products do not contain ultraprocessed ingredients. Chief executive officer Megan Westgate stated that the organization intends for the new framework to set a benchmark as regulators and industry groups debate definitions for ultraprocessed items. [1]
Food Dive reported that despite rising consumer concern surrounding ultraprocessed foods, the food industry currently lacks an agreed standard definition. The new Non-UPF Verified program is designed to provide a framework that companies can use when reformulating their products. [1]
The Non-GMO Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Bellingham, Washington. It was established as an initiative by independent natural food retailers across the United States and Canada to verify that retail items comply with its Non-GMO Project Standard. [4]
In separate updates, PR Newswire and Food and Beverage Magazine both reported that Caribbean food manufacturer Calypso Harvest earned Non-GMO Project Verification for its line of frozen foods. [2][3]
