PepsiCo chief executive Ramon Laguarta announced plans to increase funding for key beverage lines, including Mountain Dew and newly acquired functional soda brand Poppi. Food Dive reported that the company is directing urgent attention toward improving its soft drink performance following weak quarterly volume metrics. [1]

Sales volume for North American beverages dropped by 2% during the recent quarter. Food Dive reported that while PepsiCo achieved gains in its energy and hydration categories, the chief executive stated that he does not feel good about the performance of the soda division. [1]

To spur growth, PepsiCo intends to introduce additional functional benefits to the Poppi brand. Caleb Bradham created the original formula for Pepsi-Cola in 1898 using pepsin and kola nuts to assist digestion. [1][3]
