Czech testing finds Salmonella in a quarter of imported poultry samples

Czech food safety inspectors confirmed Salmonella bacteria in 23 out of 93 samples of imported poultry meat during enhanced testing operations. According to Food Safety News, the State Veterinary Administration stepped up inspections targeting the pathogen in imported poultry products at the end of July. The testing program revealed contamination in approximately a quarter of all tested poultry shipments. [1]

The discovery of contamination in poultry meat comes as an ongoing outbreak in Prague expands. Food Safety News reported that illnesses linked to the Salmonella outbreak in the Czech capital have risen to nearly 400 cases. [1]

Salmonella is a genus of Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria within the family Enterobacteriaceae. The species Salmonella enterica predominates in infections involving warm-blooded hosts, including humans and commercial livestock. [4]

Poultry farming produces meat and eggs from domesticated birds, primarily chickens, with more than 60 billion chickens slaughtered for consumption globally each year. [3]
