The Federal Trade Commission has issued orders to nine major corporations, including retail giants Walmart and Target, to provide detailed information on how personal consumer data is used to set prices. Grocery Dive, Food Manufacturing, NBC 5 Chicago, Retail Dive, Reuters, AOL.com, and Yahoo Finance all reported that the regulatory agency is examining whether customer data collected through loyalty programs and other tracking tools is being utilized to alter price tags. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

The federal inquiry extends beyond traditional retail businesses to cover a broader range of consumer-facing sectors. Grocery Dive, Food Manufacturing, NBC 5 Chicago, Retail Dive, Reuters, AOL.com, and Yahoo Finance reported that the regulatory orders were also delivered to several airline companies, ride-sharing operations, and food delivery entities. The FTC aims to assess how individualized data tracking influences both price tags and worker compensation across these platforms. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Walmart utilizes automated fulfillment centers and data-driven inventory management across its U.S. operations, making it the largest private employer in the country. As FTMQ Food reported earlier, Walmart announced it would not renew a patent related to scan-and-go technology after facing public criticism regarding potential dynamic pricing applications. Walmart corporate affairs head Dan Bartlett previously requested that advocacy group Groundwork Collaborative correct public statements regarding the retailer's pricing practices. [10][11]

The FTC orders require the targeted companies to submit comprehensive operational details so regulators can evaluate the practical impacts of algorithmic pricing on market competition and consumer costs. [1]
