Canadian food and pharmacy retailer Loblaw Companies has rejected hundreds of millions of dollars in supplier price increase requests this year, Canadian Grocer reported on October 28, 2026. The retailer stated that it is actively challenging price hikes that it considers unjustified. [1]

According to Canadian Grocer, the overall dollar value of supplier cost increase requests rose by 120 percent during the fourth quarter compared to the previous year. This dollar expansion occurred even though the total volume of price increase requests from suppliers dropped by 35 percent. [1]

Loblaw reported that cost pressures are driven by rising commodity prices alongside other operational expenses, Canadian Grocer said. The company is currently reviewing supplier submissions that cover 2,000 specific items, which represent 32 million dollars in annualized cost increases. [1]

The price increase requests span both grocery and non-food categories, Canadian Grocer reported. Specific affected product groups include baking mixes, doughs, cheese, and haircare items. [1]

Loblaw operates under the broader Canadian business lineage established by the Weston family, whose early corporate leadership included Willard Garfield Weston, the executive who built George Weston Limited into a major global food processing and distribution enterprise. [1][2]
