The British Retail Consortium has called on the UK government to use the upcoming Autumn Budget to cut business costs after headline consumer price index inflation reached 3.5 per cent, Fibre2Fashion and The Armchair Trader both report. Food inflation remained steady at 1.3 per cent, according to Fibre2Fashion. [1][2]
The British Retail Consortium stated that the latest inflation figures dictate the April 2027 business rates uplift, Fibre2Fashion reported. Without government action, retailers face approximately 250 million pounds, or about 333 million dollars, in additional tax bills. [1]
Lowering operational expenses would allow retail businesses to restrict price increases while expanding capital investments in retail locations and staffing, according to Fibre2Fashion. [1]
The 2026 United Kingdom budget is scheduled to be delivered to the House of Commons on 28 October 2026 by Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey. [5]
