Only a few attendees raised their hands when asked if they felt comfortably prepared for the Food Traceability Rule at the 2026 Global Floral and Produce Show in Orlando, Florida. Supermarket News reported that Andy Kennedy, chief traceability officer at iFoodDS, addressed the audience on Wednesday regarding compliance with the regulation, also known as FSMA 204. [1]
The deadline for compliance with the regulation was postponed from January 2026 to July 2028. Supermarket News reported that Andy Kennedy advised businesses to focus on proper labelling to ensure they are ready for the upcoming requirements. [1]
Label legibility remains a critical point for supply chain compliance. Supermarket News reported that Carol McMillan, senior director of IT for Naturine Farms, stated that her company asks its growers to include labels and scanning as part of their quality control inspections, because damaged or illegible labels disrupt the entire process. [1]
The broader impact of the regulation is also drawing academic focus. According to the Georgia Institute of Technology, a paper released on October 13, 2026, found that small farmers are experiencing significant operational burdens from the Food Traceability Rule. [2]
