A cyberattack hit major French supermarket chains on 11 October, causing widespread failure in their cooling and refrigeration systems. According to Just Food, Dominique Schelcher, the chief executive officer of Coopérative U, confirmed that cooling equipment at several stores was impacted. Just Food also reported that retailer E. Leclerc stated one of its regional entities had been targeted, while Ahold Delhaize stores in the Netherlands faced a cyber incident starting the same day. [1]

The operational disruption forced affected stores to confront immediate product loss and safety concerns. CBC reported that the digital intrusion defrosted supermarket freezers and spoiled stored food across hundreds of retail locations. Modern Diplomacy stated that the sudden overheating of refrigeration units triggered fires alongside significant food losses. [4][5]

The targeted retail format relies on large, self-service facilities that organize food, beverages, and household items under one roof. Modern supermarket infrastructure uses centralized electronic controls to manage temperature conditions for perishable goods across expansive retail spaces. [8]

The incident highlights increasing supply chain vulnerabilities as grocery chains depend on integrated network systems. Modern digital intrusions against critical business infrastructure frequently rely on malicious software, credentials theft, or supply chain compromises to disable operational technology and cause physical disruption.
