Supermarket News reported on October 28 that retail giant Kroger plans to open 110 new stores by 2029. The Cincinnati-based grocer revealed during its Investor Day earlier in October that it will introduce three revised store floor plans designed to support both traditional in-person shopping and omnichannel fulfillment. [1]

According to Supermarket News, citing a report from The Columbus Dispatch, the new store designs will place food at the center of the store layout. Kroger will place a broader focus on prepared meals and fresh foods across all three formats. [1]

The planned floor plans vary by location density, Supermarket News reported. Kroger will deploy a 99,000-square-foot store layout in high-volume markets, a standard 75,000-square-foot store format, and a 50,000-square-foot layout tailored for smaller retail footprints. [1]

Kroger operates supermarkets and multi-department stores across the United States. Historically, the company expanded through early innovations such as self-service grocery models, vertical integration in manufacturing and distribution, and major acquisitions including its 1999 purchase of Fred Meyer.
