The culinary arts program at the University of Hawaii Maui College is celebrating its 50th anniversary, Maui Now reported. The institution has trained prominent local chefs and sustained its vocational instruction through major industry disruptions including the pandemic. [1]

Student initiatives within the program have historically provided practical business experience alongside kitchen training, according to Maui Now. In 2009, students prepared bentos and dishes for weekly sale at the Kahului swap meet to generate funds for educational travel. [1]

The revenues funded educational travel to major dining markets, including visits to San Francisco to study diverse cuisines and tour seminal establishments such as Chez Panisse. Former students, including chef Jonathan Pasion, subsequently built international culinary careers after completing the program, Maui Now reported. [1]

The public college is located in Kahului, Hawaii, on the island of Maui. It operates as one of ten campuses within the University of Hawaii system and maintains accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. [2]
